"Some of the greatest boxers in Britain have come out of Cardiff and this book is a must-read for fight fans, whether you're Welsh or not."                                                                                                                                     Colin Colin Hart, The Sun

"Everybody in boxing knows the big names, the men that won titles and made the money. This book is not just about the famous fighters, it's about the forgotten heroes of the Welsh ring. This book tells all their stories and it is long overdue."
Steve Bunce, Boxing Broadcaster and Journalist

"A compelling and fascinating study. Although we are familiar with champions like Robinson, Erskine, Petersen and Driscoll, the author has uncovered some hidden gems - the extraordinary and forgotten stories of Fred Dyer, 'The Singing Boxer', Albert Love and Albert Barnes, to name but three."
Claude Abrams, Editor, Boxing News

"Boxing fans in and out of Wales will love this collection of mini biographies profiling no less than 50 classic boxers from the Cardiff area...An indispensable guide to Cardiff boxers and a great resource for compiling those pub quizzes!"
South Wales Argus

"Boxing has played a great part in the culture of Wales and now, thanks to former Echo boxing columnist Gareth Jones, the capital city has its own pugilistic history."                                                                                                                                 Brian Brian Lee, Cardiff historian

"...a long overdue reminder of how much Cardiff has given to boxing. The verdict? A knockout"
Dan O'Neill, South Wales Echo

A must-buy for all fight fans, this book profiles more than 50 Cardiff boxers, from the days of the prize ring to modern times. They include stars of both professional and amateur codes, world champions and Commonwealth Games medal winners. Many of them were produced by the capital's tough working-class districts, old and new, from the dockland areas of Grangetown, Newtown and Tiger Bay to the council estates of Ely and Llanedeyrn. All played their part in the sporting folklore of the city. They include many familiar names: 'Peerless' Jim Driscoll, Jack Petersen, Joe Erskine and two world titleholders, Steve Robinson and Barry Jones. But there are also those who were almost forgotten: John O'Brien, who began in the bare-knuckle era; Fred Dyer, renowned worldwide as 'The Singing Boxer'; Albert Love and Johnny Ryan, who both (whisper it) won international glory in the white vest of England. There are also more than 80 photographs, many of which have never before appeared in book form.

Gareth Jones is a journalist who has been writing and broadcasting on boxing in Wales for more than 30 years, including over 15 years as Boxing Correspondent of the South Wales Echo, and a longer period as Welsh Boxing Correspondent of Boxing News.
